United Nations at 75
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his speech to the 75th UNGA session mentioned that the form and structure of the UN reflect the world of 1945. These are inadequate to face the challenges of the 21st century. He also highlighted India’s contribution to the world body, including UN peacekeeping. He stressed that India with 18 % of the world population must be included in the decision-making structures of the UN. This was a reference to the need to expand the permanent members’ category of the UN Security Council and accommodate the world’s largest democracy.
Gandhi’s Contemporary Relevance
Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869. It is remarkable that even after 150 years people read and study Gandhi in the hope that they will find answers to contemporary problems. This is testimony to the universalism of Gandhi’s ideas. On Gandhi Jayanti, we should reflect on the state of the world and the relevance of Gandhian ideals. Can, the core of Gandhian philosophy, truth and nonviolence, make the world more peaceful, safer and happier?
China's Debt Trap in Central Asia
Chinese interest in Central Asia is multifold. Firstly to secure its northwestern region of Xinjiang, which shares a direct border with three Central Asian countries; Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan.
Gandhi’s Ideas of Education and the New Education Policy
It is worth a while on the eve of Gandhi’s birth anniversary to recall his ideas of education and how they are reflected in India’s New Education Policy (NEP). In the times of artificial intelligence, robotics and machine learning, seemingly perhaps it may be out dated to revisit Gandhi’s ideas of education, but then these are only the carriers of the learning process, and not the end product or basic objectives of education. A study of Gandhi’s ideas of education and the NEP clearly reflects a great degree of their convergence.
The Palestinian Predicament
The normalisation of diplomatic relations between Israel and the UAE and Bahrain earlier this month has changed the regional dynamic as more Arab countries may follow the lead. This has a direct impact on the Palestinian psyche and support system as the Arab League countries always mandated that any normalisation of ties with the Jewish state will be predicated on the two states solution in accordance with UN Resolutions, Arab Peace Plan of 2002 and the international understandings like Oslo Accords.
