The Economic and Geopolitical Implications of Evergrande
More often than not, the most objective and well-analysed piece of writing is not possible when a crisis is unfolding. The tendency of journalists and analysts will be to rush information to their readers and clients, respectively. There will be less time for reflection. A far clearer and perceptive analysis will become available, over time. Alternatively, it may be worth perusing stuff that was written well before a crisis happened. For example, if someone had warned of Evergrande well before the s**t hit the fan this year, then that would or should carry a lot more weight.
Evolving Situation in Afghanistan: Challenges and Prospects for India-Tajikistan Cooperation
The Setting
The events in Afghanistan have come full circle since 18 October, 2001 when the US Special Forces were inserted from across the Central Asian borders. Whilst it might appear as history repeating itself, the circumstances have changed so radically that the future events will not unfold in an imitation of the ones set off with that crossing. If the dynamic of military conflict in 2001 is kept in mind, the “rapid collapse” of the Ghani government should not appear so surprising;
The Libyan Elections – Amidst Hope and Despair
I fondly and vividly recall one of the finest and first ever elections held in the newly liberated Libya in 2012 when the man on the street just looked enthusiastically at their future that might have fulfilled their revolutionary dream. The elections despite an absence of a security outfit and roving militias were carried by the hope of the Libyans. Even though the seeds of its failure were sown in the election law itself and the fear of the Islamists getting the bigger cake, as had just happened in neighbouring Egypt where Muslim Brotherhood had taken control of the reins of power.
Tackling Vaccine Inequity: Quad’s Role in the Global Vaccine Supply Chains
The Covid-19 pandemic which reared its ugly head in the Wuhan province of China in December 2019 was quick to wreak havoc across the globe in the mere matter of a few months. In the current global realities a newly emergent virus isn’t necessarily restricted to arbitrary borders and thus, soon a localized disease outbreak became a raging pandemic. More than a year since the beginning of its onslaught, the impact of the disease is yet to abate. Newly emergent and increasingly virulent mutant strains such as the recent Delta variant, continue to engender new waves of infections and deaths.
Fumio Kishida’s Priorities and India-Japan Relations
On 29th September 2021 when Fumio Kishida emerged as the winner in a struggle for party leadership the issue of next Prime Ministership of Japan was unequivocally settled. The election was necessitated by Yoshihide Suga’s announcement to step down in the wake of severely declining public support because of his handling of the COVID-19 during the Olympics. Thus on 4th October 2021, a suave, sophisticated and soft-spoken gentleman from Hiroshima, wrapped in diplomatic elegance took charge of the office as 100th Prime Minister of modern Japan.
China’s Military Planes Pass through the ADIZ of Taiwan and its Implications
Since last year China’s People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) has been sending aircrafts to pass through the Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) of Taiwan. As of early October of this year, there have been more than 600 sorties of intrusions by Chinese military aircrafts based on the information from Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense. Not all of such intrusions were conducted by fighter jets: sometimes Chinese used slow-speed electric reconnaissance or anti-submarine aircrafts to cruise around ADIZ and stayed in the air for long time to avoid accusations from Taiwan.
